Eden in The Community

Many people have recognised that the three plagues of loneliness, helplessness and boredom are at least as prevalent in Elders living in their own homes as those in long term care and wondered whether the success of the Eden Alternative in the latter could be replicated in the community. In response to this debate, and with the support of the Alzheimer's Association of America, a programme has been developed for anyone who is involved in the care of an Elder outside of a formal care setting. This programme is called Eden at Home.

What is Eden at Home?

  • Eden at Home is a programme based upon the ten principles that make up the Eden Alternative philosophy of care and has been developed for the elderly who are being cared for in their own homes.

  • The programme has two approaches; one for general care and the other for those living with dementia.

  • Eden at Home is based on the formation of care partnerships that include the person being care for, their carers, family, friends and anyone else who is involved in the provision of their care.

  • Eden Alternative Educators train interested professionals, or others in caring positions, to set up care partnerships and to teach the Eden Alternative principles and their use in a community setting.

  • Groups of care partners meet on a regular basis to network and support one another and to exchange ideas with periodic support from the Eden at Home trainer.

What does Eden at Home do?

  • Provides survival tips to help everyone on the care partner team deal with and prevent loneliness, helplessness and boredom,

  • Emphasises the power of giving as well as receiving for everyone on the team,

  • Inspires participants to shift perceptions about ageing and disability,

  • Shares creative ways to share joy, hope, wisdom, respect, spontaneity and connection.

  • Encourages development of meaningful connections between care partner teams,

  • Offers tools for reducing stress and avoiding burnout,

Organisations that may wish to have Certified Eden at Home trainers on their staff include private and not for profit organisations, private care agencies or any organisation providing care in the community and supporting the elderly to remain in their own homes.
