Eden Alternative International Since the Eden Alternative was founded in 1991 it has grown rapidly from a predominantly North American organisation to an International organisation with representation and training in 14 countries. Eden Alternative in the UK and Ireland works closely with its colleagues in other countries to share ideas and best practice, wherever they originate. USA The home office for the Eden Alternative is located in the US. Apart from providing resources and support for Educators and Mentors, the home office coordinates the bi-annual International Eden Alternative Conference which in 2010 will be held in Denver, Colorado. www.edenalt.com
Europe The European Eden Co-ordinator, Christa Monkhouse, supports Eden Regional Coordinators and Eden activities and developments in Europe and Scandinavia. The European office also facilitates the European Eden Alternative Conference the next of which will be held at the end of September 2010. www.eden-europe.net.
Christa is also the chair of the Eden Europe Board which includes all the European Co-ordinators and which ensures a close cooperation and sharing of best practice as the Eden Alternative is developed in various countries
The Eden Institute
is mainly responsible for teaching and training in the German speaking
countries of Europe, i.e. Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The
Institute also offers training, consulting and research in all areas of
ageing services such as Eden-at-Home training, education of
life-assistants and pre-design seminars for providers and architects.
Denmark and Scandinavia Eden in Denmark has developed since 2004 with training courses twice a year, and grew out of a project, funded by Ministry of Social Welfare from October 2007 until June 2009, to provide Eden Associate training to the staff of 26 care homes in 3 municipalities. Following the successful conclusion of the project, the Danish coordinators, Aase Porsmose and Karin Dahl are continuing to provide training and support to organisations implementing the Eden Alternative in Denmark. They are also helping Eden to grow in the other Scandinavian countries, such as Norway, Sweden, Finland, Faeroe Islands and Iceland. www.edenindenmark.dk
Australia & New Zealand Eden in Oz & NZ was originally formed by a group of passionate people who were inspired after hearing Dr William Thomas in Hawaii in 1999, and who believed that aged care in Australia and New Zealand could also be different. They returned to Australia, and worked with staff at their homes and facilities to grow Eden training and mentoring throughout Australasia. Since then, over 1000 people have been trained as Eden Associates, with more people and organisations committing to sustainable culture change through effective training and implementation of the Eden Principles. Eden Associates are providing visionary leadership, embracing innovative ways of mentoring and championing person centred care as the norm throughout Aged Care, Community Care and Allied Healthcare sectors. www.edeninoz.com.au
Canada Eden in Canada began in 1996 in the Eastern Provinces and is now the responsibility of Kathleen Burnett www.edencan.com. Covering the whole of Canada from the Eastern Provinces proved to be impractical so in 1999 Dr. Bill and Jude Thomas welcomed Cheryl George and Suellen Beatty from Eden Health Solutions Saskatoon, Saskatchewan www.edenhealthsolutions.com to be responsible for the Eden Alternative in the Western Provinces of Canada.
Japan Eden in Japan began in 2004 and is coordinated by Yuki Nakajima, who worked at BEAM (Bringing the Eden Alternative to Michigan) office as a trainee in 1999. Certified Eden Associate Training and various workshops including Eden workshop 101 are held in Japanese. There are two books on Eden written by the regional coordinator. www.edenjapan.jp
